Rings of Power: 5 things to know before season 2

It took two years to hatch a new season of the series. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It must be said that it is not one of those productions that Prime Video treats lightly, this new exploration of Tolkien's universe is the most expensive project in its history. The platform has the firm intention of paying tribute to the imagination of the British writer, of satisfying fans of fantasy and ambitious adventures.

Like the books it is inspired by, the Prime Video creation is based on a dense universe, a large gallery of characters and a multitude of narrative issues. In two years, many viewers will undoubtedly have forgotten the main elements of the plot, a little review session is necessary. Here five things to remember from the previous season.

Galadriel has discovered the truth

Since her debut in the series, Galadriel has only moved forward with one goal: to ensure that Sauron does not return. It is because of him that her brother died, and even if the servant of Morgoth has disappeared for millennia, the warrior is convinced that he is hiding in the shadows and preparing his return. While King Gil-galad declares the end of the war, Galadriel does not hear it that way. She is going to throw herself out of the boat that was to take her back to Valinor to return to Middle-earth. On her way, she meets Halbranda human who, she will later discover, is none other than Sauron.

The series will end on the discovery of this true identity by Galadrielwho has nevertheless chosen not to share this information with her peers. For some mysterious reason, she prefers to be the only one who knows the truth. We can expect her silence to be at the epicenter of her journey in season 2.

Mordor is born

In the Southlands, a war has taken place between the Men and the Orcs of Adar. Although he was captured, the corrupted elf managed to activate a mechanism that released the waters on Mount Doom. The Volcano has awakened, destroying part of the Numenorean armies. The tunnels dug by the troops of Adar did not only serve them to move discreetly. Desolation reigns in this place that is now called Mordor.

The stranger wants to find out who he is

For the Piévelus, the resurgence of evil was not really a concern. For Nori and his companions, it was mainly a matter of finding a new place to settle down. But on the way, the young girl will witness a strange event. A meteorite has fallen on Earth, it was a naked and confused man. Nori takes him under his wing and quickly discovers that he has powers.

After maintaining the mystery about his identity, many viewers imagined that it was Sauron, season 1 brought a first element of response. He is not the antagonist, but an “Istar”. In Tolkien's imagination, this term refers to a wise man belonging to a mysterious Order of magicians. Everything suggests that this is Gandalf, unless it is Saruman or one of the Istar that Jackson's franchise has not summoned.

Mithril and Cataclysmic Events

Elrond also had a mission to accomplish. On the King's orders, the elf went to Khazad-dûm to reconnect with his friend Prince Durin IV. He asked him for help in creating an immense forge. But during his stay, the hero made a discovery. The city of the Dwarves contains a precious metal, capable of reversing the necrosis that affects the elves and threatens their immortality.

He will not succeed in convincing Durin IV and especially his father the King to entrust him with some fragments to save his people. It is therefore with a tiny quantity that he returns to his people. But before that, King Durin III wanted to make sure that the gallery allowing access to the Mithril was sealed. He involuntarily awakened a creature that was hiding there: the Balrog.

Three rings for the elves…

With a name like that, the Prime Video series couldn't stay away from the famous rings of power for too long. After all, the series was about telling how these artifacts were forged and how Sauron hatched the one who rules them all. Elrond's journey allowed Celebrimbor to collect a tiny amount of the metal that would be used to create them. Thanks to Halbrand's teachings on the alloy, the elf had the idea of forging three rings to protect the elves. “One will always corrupt. Two will divide. With three, you get balance.”

Where are the characters at the end of season 1?

After eight episodes, The Rings of Power is still far from having revealed all its secrets. The twists and turns have been numerous, and each has traveled Middle-earth in order to fulfill his destiny. Arondir, Brownyn and Theo leave the Southlands in search of a land of asylum, they set sail for an ancient colony of Numenor.

Galadriel and Elrond are in Valinor, after the forging the first three rings. Nori has found the Stranger, they are walking towards the Rhûn. The character played by Daniel Weyman seeks to know more about his origins and those of his powers. Prince Durin IV is at Khazad-Dûm with his people. Finally, Sauron / Halbrand is back in the Southern Lands now called Mordor. Will he inform Adar of his return or continue to hide his true identity?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power come back this Thursday, August 29 on Prime Video. The first three episodes will be made available on day one, then the series will return to a rhythm of one episode per week until the conclusion five weeks later.
