Peter Pan and Steamboat Willie horror version, that's what it looks like…
Disney has delayed the fateful date, but now has no choice. Some of its heroes have fallen into the public domain, leaving anyone who wants the opportunity to exploit them on the small and big screen. Winnie the Pooh has already had the privilege of being offered his horror film, Blood and Honey was offered on purchasing platforms in January 2023. A sequel is in preparation, enough to traumatize an entire generation lulled by the adventures of the little yellow animal. The director and producer Rhys Frake-Waterfield does not intend to stop there, a sequel is in preparation and should be released in a few days on VOD.
The bear won't be the only one to benefit from such exploitation, Frake-Waterfield adds a new entry to his universe dedicated to heroes who have fallen into the public domain. Head to Neverland with a spine-chilling Peter Pan. Wendy is no longer the accomplice of the child who refuses to grow up… but his enemy. The character imagined by JM Barrie has kidnapped her little brother Michael. Now an adult, the young woman sets out to find him with the firm intention of protecting the children who cross her path. The horror version also summons Tinkerbell, who in this version “takes heroin, believing it is fairy dust”.
The trailer, shared a few days ago, offers a glimpse of the film which is clearly not afraid to recycle iconic horror sequences. Between a scene that looks like the introduction of It: Chapter 1 and a thinly disguised reference to Shiningthe film directed by Scott Jeffrey promises to be at least as original as the characters it takes on. It must be said that Blood and Honey did not shine either by the virtuosity of its director.
We whistle loudly…
Elsewhere in the world of protagonists who have fallen into the public domain, Screamboat Willie may change the way viewers look at the legendary Disney mouse. While the best-known version — the one that regularly appears on the small screen — is not yet accessible to everyone, Steamboat Willie (1928) already offers its second horror film. After Mickey Mouse Trap, which is to tell the story of how the arrival of a masked killer turns a party into a nightmare. Screamboat Willie This is intended to be closer to its source material, since the story will take place on a boat.
A late-night ferry ride turns into a nightmare when a murderous and mischievous mouse unleashes itself on helpless passengers. The producers of Terrifier 2 & 3 are at the helm in this film which must invest American theaters in January 2025. For the moment, there is no indication that a French release is planned. The exploitation of Steamboat Willie still promises to make some noise. To the point of attracting the attention of a French distributor? See you in a few months to find out.
