My Lady Jane Canceled by Prime Video, This Is Not a Good Sign…

Prime Video was the first platform to tackle romance. This new literary genre is very popular on social networks and consists of a clever mix of romance (sometimes erotic) and fantasy. While the emphasis is obviously on the relationship between the main characters, these wonderful worlds add to This derivative of “Chick Lit”. With My Lady JanePrime Video seemed to want to invest in this very profitable niche, and undoubtedly achieve the same levels of popularity as The Bridgerton Chronicle. But despite appearances, Gemma Burgess' creation has enjoyed moderate success.

No matter how much content is dedicated to platforms like TikTok and YouTube, how many rave reviews there are on Rotten Tomatoes, or how many series are featured in the top 10 most-watched at the moment, My Lady Jane did not meet its targets. The series is absent from the Nielsen ranking, which focuses on the scores of original productions across all platforms. week of July 1st to 7tha few days after its launch, the series My Lady Jane does not appear among the ten most-watched productions in the United States. An absence that has clearly not escaped the attention of the leaders of Prime Video, who prefer to cut costs. As reported by Variety, The series was simply cancelled.

The creator had nevertheless shared her plans for a possible season 2. Faced with Entertainment WeeklyGemma Burgess said:

“If we’re lucky enough to get a season 2, we’re going to continue to see them grow and see how they survive in a world where Jane is free… but the Kingdom isn’t. Mary is still on the throne. There’s a lot of work to do before things get better.”

Note that if the literary saga only devotes one novel to the story of Jane Grey, the sequel evoking the journey of Jane Eyre. Some elements of the story were removed from the series, however, leaving the door open for a sequel. Viewers will be able to turn to the book for some answers to their questions.

Bad sign?

It was only a matter of time. Faced with the resounding success of “romantasy”publishing houses have dedicated themselves to these universes, platforms want to get their share of the pie. For Prime Video, My Lady Jane was only a test before tackling an otherwise famous work. Announced last November that it had acquired the adaptation rights to Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Published in May 2023, the first volume of the Empyrean saga has reached the top of the famous New York Times Best-Seller List.

Prime Video is probably hoping that this success in bookstores will give it a record audience. However, not everything is over for the platform, which will not be able to count on the readers of the saga alone to recoup its investment. Does romance have what it takes to invade our screens? or is it doomed to follow the same path as adolescent dystopia? It must be said that for the former, the exercise is even more perilous. If My Lady Jane is not the most raw novel of its kind, some works could prove particularly difficult to adapt. Romantasy delights in depicting complicated, toxic love stories and does not skimp on explicit and rarely consensual sex scenes. If in its form and substance the genre seems forged for adolescents, its violence would not make it accessible to younger readers.
