It's official, The Acolyte will not have a season 2

Last June, Lucasfilm left the Skywalker saga to explore a new era in the galaxy far, far away. Drawing inspiration from the novels from the “Luminous” projectthe series The Acolyte was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era for Star Wars. After several lackluster series, Leslye Headland's creation was destined for a huge success. Disney+ also seemed to be preparing the ground for a season 2, the platform had confidence.

But here it is, shortly after its launch, the latest addition to the catalog faced a wave of harsh criticism and audiences well below the company's expectations. The first episodes had nevertheless distinguished themselves as the best launch of an original series in 2024 on Disney+, this craze was short-lived. According to the Nielsen ranking, which analyzes audiences on American soil, The series left the TOP 10 in its third week only to return to it as we approach the conclusion.

While the adventures of Osha and Mae convinced a good part of the critics, the public was not sensitive to this detective story against the backdrop of a new struggle between the light and dark sides of the force. Rotten Tomatoesonly 18% of published reviews (+25,000) are positive. This disappointment ultimately put paid to any plans for a sequel, The Acolyte is canceled after just one episode, Deadline reports. While the conclusion offered the possibility of a second season, viewers will have to make do with imagining what the future holds for the twins and Qimir.

Disney+ and Star Wars, a business that is not working?

Since its launch in 2019, Disney+ has made the Star Wars brand its flagship. The Mandalorian was the first original production of the subscription streaming service, the behemoth capable of attracting many new subscribers. While the saga on the big screen was facing a particularly virulent critical reception, the meeting of Grogu and Din Djarin was emulating others. A return to the roots, a nostalgic production, the creation of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau seemed to put the universe imagined by George Lucas back on track. But a year later, The Book of Boba Fett imposed itself as a painful observation: one should never rejoice too quickly. Moreover, most of the series developed under the Star Wars label will not have had second seasons. Andor, Ahsoka And The Mandalorian are the only ones to have benefited from such preferential treatment.

Regardless, Disney+ is not really the type to be discouraged and is already starting to prepare the release of its new series. Called Skeleton Crewshe wants to pay homage to the adventure films of the 80s. Think The Goonies meets Star Wars, with Jude Law in the lead role. Andor is also due to return to our screens in 2025, as is Ahsoka. Finally, The Mandalorian will leave the shelves of the American platform to invest in dark rooms under the impetus of Jon Favreau. Concerning the High Republic, no other dedicated series has been made official. James Mangold will nevertheless turn to the past, with his film evolving at the dawn of the Jedi. Quite a program.
