Ian McKellen discusses his return in the next Lord of the Rings

On Prime Video, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has just launched its second season, but Warner Bros. is already looking further ahead. Last May, the American studio announced the development of a new live-action feature film set in the universe of JRR Tolkien's novels. Andy Serkis is now at the helm of a certain Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum which will attempt to tell the story of the hunt for the fallen Hobbit by Aragorn and Gandalf. This passage summarized by the two characters in the first volume of the trilogy will therefore take the form of an epic in its own right.

And for the occasion, Warner Bros. intends to secure the services of one of the stars of the film franchise. While we still don't know anything about a possible return of Viggo Mortensen in the role of Aragorn, Ian McKellen has spoken out about the next Lord of the Rings film and his statements are rather reassuring. Everything remains to be determined, but the actor is probably not closed to the question, despite his rather disappointing experience on the set of The Hobbit trilogy.

“So they had better act quickly.“

It was during an interview with the British newspaper The Big Issue (and reported by our colleagues at Deadline) that Ian McKellen revealed Warner Bros' intentions for the upcoming Gollum feature film.The enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating… I can’t tell you more than that. I was just told that there would be more films, that Gandalf would be involved and that they hoped I would play him.” he explains.

But after a little accident on the occasion of one of his performances in the London play Player Kings – Sir Ian McKellen has fallen off the stage – will the actor really be able to reprise the role of Gandalf in future projects? The main person concerned does not seem bothered in the least, and even seems eager to dive back into this universe since he adds: “When? I don't know. What's the script? It's not written yet. So they better hurry.”

One thing is for sure: Ian McKellen will continue to play as long as he has the strength. A second interview with BBC Breakfast reveals that the 85-year-old actor wants to continue his profession “as long as the legs, lungs and mind still function.”While waiting to learn more about Gandalf's return to the big screen, fans of the Lord of the Rings will be able to go to theaters on December 11th to discover a Japanese animated film called The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrimset 250 years before the events of the cult trilogy.
