Hit Man: 3 reasons to watch the police comedy on Canal+

Richard Linklater, Oscar-winning director of one of cinema's greatest trilogies (Before) in the staging, the very prominent Glen Powell on the screen, and a pitch very loosely inspired by a true story where a philosophy teacher plays the fake bounty hunter for the police… What more did we need to look into Hit Man ? Until today, many things. The film produced by Netflix had difficulty arriving on French territory and it took several months and Canal+ to finally be able to take a look at this film which collects ” only ” more than 90% favorable opinions from the press AND public on Rotten Tomatoes.

Gary Johnson is a very ordinary man. A psychology and philosophy teacher, he lives alone with his two cats. But to earn a little money, he spends his free time doing stakeouts for the police. His mission? Record the confessions of murder sponsors via a fake bounty hunter. A role he will have to occupy and which he takes a liking to, until love gets involved. Here is the synopsis of Hit Man and here are three good reasons to jump on it.

Glen Powell, Master of Disguise and Hollywood

The elders may remember him in Expendables 3 or the series Scream Queens (in which he was already great), but Glen Powell saw his fame explode with Top Gun: MaverickThen Everything but you and finally recently Twisters. To the point of being considered today in the top 10 of the new generation of the most prominent talents in Hollywood, and of allowing himself the luxury of refusing a role in the next Jurassic World. You only need to spend ten minutes in front of it. Hit Manhis second collaboration with Linklater (after Everybody Wants Some) to understand why.

Not only does the guy have a pleasant physique, but he also exudes an incredibly friendly aura. In Hit Manit is easy to see that he has as much fun as his character in getting into the skin of his different incarnations of bounty hunter with wigs, makeup, even accents that go with it. A good-natured atmosphere that transpires in his interpretation and which constantly offers a source of freshness to a scenario that sometimes takes more conventional paths.

Adria Arjona, anything but without her

But for there to be a beautiful romance, there must be a beautiful duo. Adria Arjona is a ball of energy who will be the vector of the transformation of his partner, mastering both the drama and the most comical accents of Hit ManShe and Powell form an endearing couple whose chemistry is immediate and obvious.

This is perhaps the other effect of the actor, that of bringing a general good mood, because without denying the talent of the actress, it must be recognized that the alchemy of the duo is a constant in the filmography of the actor, whether with Sydney Sweeney (Everything but you) or Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters). A thing not so easy to obtain that seems, for the moment, to stick to Powell's skin. Here, we feel that the tandem has no egotoo preoccupied with returning the ball to his or her partner in a perfect share.

The Hit Man of our fantasies

The symbiosis of its casting naturally leads to the third point: the creation of fantasy. Hit Man presents itself as a kind dream factory where Gary Johnson will embody the imagination of his targets as much as it will awaken in him his own ” ego ” in the philosophical sense of the term. For her part, Madison Figueroa Masters is also a constant reinvention, the kind of which we never really know the nature of.

And then there is the fantasy of cinema, of Linklater having fun with the cinematic image of the bounty hunter, of reality, of fiction, while questioning that of his actors, sometimes mixing those who they are and those who they embody. Hit Man questions identity and personality based on what Gary wants to be, or what Madison thinks he is. To the point of becoming truth? A philosophical dimension somewhat sacrificed in the last quarter of the film, but whose perceptible changes during the maturation of its story will have been appreciated, all constituting a imperfect work, but certainly charming.
