Good news for Matt Reeves' Batman
Is Matt Reeves about to break the curse that weighs on DC Comics films? The director surprised everyone in 2022, with a particularly convincing Dark Knight in the guise of Robert Pattinson. Two years later, the critically and popularly acclaimed film has found a sequel, despite a longer wait than expected, due to the health situation and the strikes that paralyzed Hollywood for several months. Delays, but no cancellations expected
If the production of The Batman II and of The Penguin has not been a long, quiet river, Matt Reeves' path within the DCU that he created is not going to end anytime soon. During an interview for the American media Collider, The director confirmed that the Batman saga would be produced and broadcast in its entirety, and that it “would closely follow the path traced“, in accordance with its initial project.
The goal of producing spin-off series centered on secondary characters, as is the case with The Penguin for example, has all the makings of a masterstroke. Matt Reeves ensures the deep and complex characterswithout weighing down the copy of his feature films, which he reserves for the dark knight. While Oswald Cobblepot is presented as a figure “intermediate, a little neglected, mocked, who is not yet in the eyes of the leader of the underworld that we know“, the series will be an opportunity to tell the story of the origins.
Other spin-offs planned?
The Batman lore is vast, and there is no shortage of ideas for series or spin-off films. While Matt Reeves has not elaborated on the identity of the characters who will soon join the Penguin in the cast of this ambitious extended universe, Harvey Dent (Double Face) is also eagerly awaited. The idea of a series centered on his story has also been confirmed half-heartedly by the director. A complicated spin-off on Arkham Asylum would also shed light on certain villains of the Batverse, while waiting for the return of the Joker, briefly seen at the end of the 2022 film.
Gotham's Machiavellian clown is a challenge in itself. Matt Reeves will indeed have the mission of bringing Batman's greatest enemy to life on screen, without denying the legacy of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, who has played the role since 2019, and will soon sign his return in the role alongside Lady Gaga in Madness for two.
