Doctor Who: the renewal of the series is still far from being assured

In recent months, Doctor Who has enjoyed a real renaissance. From a niche series for geeks who love British culture to a real television blockbuster, the evolution of the program is well deserved. It has been able to go beyond the borders of the United Kingdom following its first reboot in 2005 and has never stopped growing since. After 13 seasons full of emotions and other twists and turns, Doctor Who has offered itself a second reboot in order to cement its status as a global success once and for all. The series is now continuing its journey in partnership with Disney+, which is helping to finance it as well as broadcast it around the world. Special episodes to mark the series' 60th anniversary have helped launch this new era of Doctor Who with a touch of nostalgia.

David Tennant's brief return allowed for a striking and emotional handover for the talented Ncuti Gatwa, who now lends his features to a Doctor who is more hyperactive than ever. The first season of this reboot alongside Ruby Sunday left us wanting more, and we are already looking forward to seeing the Time Lord again in his next season scheduled for 2025. Despite the excitement behind this revival and the ambitions of showrunner Russell T Davies, it seems that the future of the series is far from guaranteed.

In November 2023, the man in charge of the series revealed to SFX Magazine that development on seasons 3 and 4 was progressing at a good pace. But less than a year after this statement, he is already going back on his words. In a new issue of the same magazineDavies explains that the following seasons have not yet been validated despite the work he has already been able to do on them. The renewal, if it is to take place, will not be made official before next year, he explains: “It's an industry decision, like any business – these things take time. I think the decision will be made after the second season airs. That's what we're expecting, that's what we've always been heading towards.

So there is no need to panic: Doctor Who seems well on its way to continuing its run. However, the performance of the second season will be essential to maintain the support of Disney, which no longer hesitates to cancel its own programs a few weeks after their broadcast. While we wait to learn more, here is what we already know about the future of the series.

Great surprises on the way

For the continuation of his adventures, the fifteenth Doctor will meet a new traveling companion. Following the departure of Ruby Sunday, we know that a certain Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu) will take over to keep the Gallifreyan company. The young woman played by Millie Gibson should nevertheless make an appearance in a few episodes of this new season.

While waiting for the second batch of episodes scheduled for a date still unknown in 2025, the series will resume its good end-of-year habits with the broadcast of a Christmas episode. Fans of Derry Girls And Bridgerton will have every interest in following this winter epic, since actress Nicolas Coughlan will be headlining this exclusive episode.
