Dead Boy Detectives season 2: Netflix has decided

On Netflix, original series have no room for error. In an effort to save money, the platform is no longer giving the black sheep in its catalog a chance. The OA has 1899 passing by Shadow and Bonemany series that were promised great things have been hit hard by the streaming service's cancellations. After investing heavily to expand its catalog, the red N is becoming more demanding. If the audiences do not live up to its expectations, if profitability is not achieved, the company no longer hesitates to cut to the chase. This strategy has just claimed a new victim.

Despite particularly enthusiastic reviews (92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.4 on Allociné)Dead Boy Detectives is… dead. Steve Yockey and Jeremy Carver's creation will not have a second season, even though the finale suggested that the journey was far from over. Variety explains that despite a good start, 3.1 million views in its first three days of broadcast, the series evolving in the universe of Sandman did not arrive to be maintained over time. She has left the TOP 10 of the most popular English-language series of the moment, only three weeks after its release.

An obstacle course

In 2021, Max wants to explore the lore of Sandman under the impetus of DC Comics. After an introduction in Doom Patrol, Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland were to be offered their series on the platform owned by Warner Bros Discovery. Ty Tennent and Sebastian Croft are announced to star in the project, the two actors must deepen the journey of the characters they already played in Doom PatrolThe arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran will nevertheless put a stop to the project, which no longer corresponds to the vision of the two men.

In 2023, Netflix takes over the universe with the firm intention of linking it to its series Sandmanalso based on the writings of Neil Gaiman. Several characters return, starting with Kirby Howell-Baptiste who finds Death. George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri are hired to play the two heroes, while Lukas Cage and Michael Beach lend their features to the Cat King and Tragic Mick.

While waiting for the return of Tom Sturridge's Sandman, Dead Boy Detectives was intended to be the lighter, but no less fantastic part of the license. Ultimately, Netflix will settle for the parent series. As a reminder, although filming for season 2 is finished, no release date has been mentioned for the moment. A return in 2024 seems quite unlikely. It will probably be in 2025 that the public will be able to get their hands on this now unique production dedicated to the imagination of Neil Gaiman. Note that the author is still an integral part of the Prime Video catalog, with the series Good Omens and a podcast that traces the history of Morpheus, it is produced by DC TV Podcast.
