Capcom Just Sabotaged Its Resident Evil Ports

Last year, Capcom bet on bringing the latest installments of resident Evil on the Apple ecosystem, in order to offer a completely new way to approach the franchise. With a single purchase for Mac, iPhone and iPad, as well as shared saves, these versions made the promise of being able to be played anywhere, anytime and without interruption. Mobile gaming has never been as popular as in recent years, but Apple and Capcom's proposal unfortunately failed to convince. In June and July of this year, statistics shared by Appfigures and Appmagic revealed that these ports were a real flop. Resident Evil 7 did not even exceed the 2000 copies sold mark, while Resident Evil Village And Resident Evil 4 are between 5000 and 7000 copies respectively.

And if that wasn't enough, Capcom has apparently decided to finish off these Apple versions once and for all with a disastrous update. Any gamer will agree that the appeal of portable platforms lies in the freedom to play in all circumstances. But against all odds, the developers of resident Evil don't care about this obvious fact and have just destroyed the major selling point of the ports.

Mandatory Internet Connection: Gamers’ Nightmare

Since the end of August, the few buyers of Resident Evil 4, 7 and Village on Apple devices are not no longer able to launch offline games. As spotted by our colleagues atEurogamerthe latest title update simply states: Due to changes to the startup process, an internet connection is now required to launch this application.

Despite repeated requests, Capcom has yet to make a statement regarding this change, so it's unclear whether it's DRM, data collection, or something else. Unsurprisingly, players are already seeking a refund from Apple, which could reduce the number of copies sold to zero. If you've purchased these titles and the updates haven't been applied yet, there's still time to avoid them so you can continue playing offline.
