A Pacific Rim series is in development

Robots and legendary monsters are popular in cinema and on the small screen. While Transformers signed its return to cinema in 2023 and is preparing to offer itself an animated film, that the Godzilla universe invested Apple TV +, Legendary looks again at the case of the Jaegers of Pacific Rim. If the failure of'Uprising seemed to have put a stop to the license, all is not lost for the saga launched by Guillermo del Toro and his screenwriter Travis Beacham. According to Variety, the studio is working on a series in collaboration with Eric Heisserer.

The creator of Shadow and Bone bounced back after his series ended, signing a deal with Legendary to develop and direct projects based on the studio's intellectual properties. Pacific Rim is the first franchise to receive a spin-off under the deal, Legendary Television president Jason Clodfelter said in a press release.

“Eric is a prolific and multi-talented creator whose critical and commercial success speaks for itself. We are thrilled to kick off our partnership with Eric, Chronology and Carmen (Lewis) with an entry into the epic and globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are confident that their vision will be an exciting extension of the franchise.”

New entry, new chance to seduce?

After a first appreciated film, born under the impetus of Guillermo del Toro and paying homage to the Kaijus, Uprising had the effect of a cold shower. The film directed by Steven S. DeKnight was not the expected success. The film only brought together $290 million at the global box office even though its budget of 150 million required revenues of over $400 million to be considered a success. This failure would put paid to any plans for a sequel, even if the saga did not disappear. Netflix has hatched a animated series in 2021baptized Pacific Rim: The Black.

Eric Heisserer's series is expected to take a very different approach in telling the story of what led to the events of the first film. In concrete terms, the writing duo is expected to tell the appearance of the Kaijus and the creation of the rift. Few details have been released, but we can expect the series to resemble any other series of its kind. On paper, the project does not seem to be much different from Monarch: Legacy of Monstersalso owned by Legendary Television. After all, the series starring Kurt Russell has enjoyed rather enthusiastic reviews, so why deprive yourself?
