A little something extra takes another step towards historic success
Pierre Niney and Pathé can congratulate themselves, The Count of Monte Cristo has passed the 7 million admissions mark and there is not much left to surpass Super Mario Bros and its 7.35 million tickets which had made it the most-watched film in France in 2023. And then being the 80th most-watched film in France of all time, it's not so bad considering the budget put into the production. But if we're looking for the real tour de force of 2024 in theaters, we have to go to Un p'tit truc en plus.
Artus' film, which tells the story of how two wanted robbers (Clovis Cornillac and himself) decide to hide among a group of people with mental disabilities, has just sold over 10 million tickets since its release on May 1st. Not bad for a film that the man had trouble financing, as the subject matter did not seem so profitable in the eyes of the various production companies. We know some who must be kicking themselves.
A big plus
A score at the French box office that allows Un p'tit truc en plus to slip into no less than ninth place in the famous historical ranking. With 10,320,712 admissions, the film exceeds the 10,302,954 tickets for Taxi 2 and will try to catch up with Le Corniaud, a legendary comedy with Bourvil and Louis de Funès, and its 11.5 million admissions. Despite an ever-present momentum for Artus' film, we must admit that it is hard to see the film achieving this as the step still seems a little high. But who knows.
In any case, Artus can walk with his head held high. He is now the French director who has generated the most tickets for a first film, ahead of Emmanuelle by Just Jaeckin and its 8.9 admissions in 1979. Un p'tit truc en plus is also the biggest success of French cinema in the last ten years and the only one to have exceeded ten million admissions since Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au bon Dieu? (12.3 million in 2014).
With figures that are enough to make your head spin and enthusiastic viewers (4.3 stars out of 5 on Allociné), Un p'tit truc en plus is bound to interest the international market since the film has been sold, for the moment, in about fifteen countries. We can already sense the looming of a future American remake project.
