Casting: Harry Potter series still looking for new Harry, Ron and Hermione

Hogwarts wasn't built in a day, so fans of the little wizard with glasses will have to be patient. More than a year ago, HBO made it official that a new adaptation of the saga was underway Harry Potter. More than 20 years after the first film, this project is to take the form of a series in seven or eight seasons, adapted from the novels that make up the literary saga. For the Warner Bros subsidiary, it is a risky mission since it will involve developing a whole new generation of actors within the mythical castle. Exit Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, new interpreters of Harry, Ron and Hermione will be called upon. At the time, the creative teams explained that they already had a few names in mind, without having contacted these young actors.

A year later, these searches have apparently yielded nothing since Wizarding World announces the opening of a new casting phase, for residents of Great Britain. On Instagram, we can read: “We are now casting for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in the upcoming HBO series. At this time, we can only consider applications from children who are aged 9-11 and who are resident in the UK or Ireland.”The company adds that it does not exclude the choice of diversity in any case. The announcement is accompanied by a clarification. “We are committed to inclusive and diverse distribution”.

A perilous mission

Finding the three leads is undoubtedly the biggest challenge the series will have to face. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have left their mark on millions of viewers and their names are still inseparable from the characters they have played for over a decade. In the late 90s, 300 children were auditioned to bring Harry Potter to life. For seven months, Warner Bros moved heaven and earth to find its green-eyed hero. It was finally when he went to the theater that David Heyman had a revelation. He saw the young Daniel Radcliffe on stage, it seemed obvious to him that the child had everything it took to embody the character imagined by Rowling.

HBO will have to find a replacement who will live up to the public's expectations. The coming months promise to be decisive for the production, which must revive the Harry Potter universe after the failure of Fantastic BeastsThe adventures of Norbert Dragonneau did not appeal in the same way, pushing the Wizarding World to turn to a story that had already proven itself. See you in 2026 on Max to find out if it's worth the effort and if the audience is there. In the meantime, we can expect first images to be shared as the creative teams progress.
