PS5 Pro: everything you need to know about the new console

The PlayStation 5 Pro will soon no longer be a myth. Like a video game Loch Ness monster, this new version of the console has occupied the minds of gamers hungry for rumors for months (or even years). But today is the day the speculations and leaks end. Sony took us by surprise by announcing overnight the broadcast of a “technical presentation on the PS5”. Behind this promise to unveil the latest “innovations in gaming technologies” is of course the revelation of a future super-powerful machine.

This year, the manufacturer is preparing for the 30th anniversary of its first console, and yes, already. The PlayStation made its debut on Japanese shelves on December 3, 1994, almost a year before its European launch on September 29, 1995. But more than just a celebration, Sony has the perfect timing to launch its new PS5 model. The design of the latter has also slipped into the visuals of the 30th anniversary ahead of time, like an easter egg a few days before the official announcement.

Boosted frame rate, better resolution or even more realistic raytracing: what developments mentioned in the many leaks will actually be implemented on PS5 Pro? Sony finally answers the questions left hanging. To not miss the launch of pre-orders and the release of the new console, here is everything you need to know from the short presentation held today.

A presentation that gets to the point

Mark Cerny, lead architect of PlayStation consoles since the PS4, presented the PS5 Pro in broad outline. This new model is based around three major new features that PlayStation calls “the big three”: a more powerful GPU, improved ray-tracing and upscaling thanks to artificial intelligence. By combining these three technologies, the manufacturer promises a console “almost twice as powerful as the PS5.” The goal is to end the choice between fidelity and performance graphics modes.

The new graphics card is said to be capable of rendering speeds that are 45% faster than the previous one. Sony has been using its most popular titles to promote it, with never-before-seen visuals on Horizon: Forbidden West, The Last of Us or even Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. The console is now able to reach the resolution of the fidelity mode while maintaining a frequency of 60 frames per second. This performance is also made possible by the integration of PSSR: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Like NVIDIA's DLSS or AMD's FSR, this feature analyzes the image to add details and boost the resolution without losing frequency.

To take advantage of this major update, players will have to break all their piggy banks. The PlayStation 5 Pro will launch on November 7th at a staggering price of €799.99. If we are still several hundred euros below a gaming PC of this caliber, this is a new milestone for the pricing of home consoles. At this price, the console will also include a 2TB SSD and a DualSense controller. Unfortunately, the disk drive and vertical support will be sold separately: enough to increase the already steep bill. For a PS5 Pro with disc player, you will therefore have to pay a total of €920. Ouch. Will you be willing to invest in this model?
