The Witcher 3: modders at your keyboards, the complete editor is coming

Mods have been around for as long as PC gaming has existed. Players have a blast with each release, creating game modes that are each crazier than the last, or integrating settings that don't exist in the base game. But it hasn't been that long since developers recognized the talent of their players and gave them credit. CD Projekt Red is set to shed more light on them with its comprehensive mod editor for The Witcher 3.

Released in 2015, the RPG is still in top form, especially since the Netflix series and the “next-gen” mode which propelled it to a second generation of consoles. But it is on PC that the game experiences the biggest changes. In fact, players have been having fun modifying it for years thanks to their original visions. By releasing its own digital toolbox, CD Projekt Red gives players the opportunity to build their mod with very complete parameters, and above all by directly using the game engine.

The big news is that this editor, called Red Kit, will be available for free, starting May 21 next. It will be available to all holders of The Witcher 3 on PC, whatever your edition, with or without DLC. The second good news is that it will be accessible on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG. Enough to satisfy the greatest number of players.

On PC only, much to the dismay of other players

As usual with this type of tool, it is not available on consoles. Yet The Witcher 3 is playable on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. If it is very complicated to implement this kind of finicky parameters with a console interface, we could have thought of a way to play the creations of other users via codes to enter into the game, as is already possible for Fortnite For example. This is unfortunately not the case for the Polish title.

For the moment, nothing predicts that a similar approach will be adopted for Cyberpunk 2077, the studio's latest game. We still had to wait 9 years to try the editor of The Witcher 3, you will therefore have to arm yourself with a little patience. Note that a playtest phase is currently available on Steam for the most impatient, and each mod created before the official release of the Red Kit will be saved for the future.
